Mayor Sala sends warning to Milan and Inter over San Siro rental contract | OneFootball

It was announced yesterday that San Siro will no longer host the 2027 Champions League final as originally planned, and the Mayor Giuseppe Sala has responded to the news.

In their statement, UEFA confirmed the decision was because the Council of Milan are unable to guarantee that the San Siro stadium and the surrounding areas would not be affected by renovation work during the period of the final in question, amid their attempts to get Milan and Inter to stay and renovate it.

Sala spoke to Il Giornale at an event called ‘La Grande Milano: Dimensione Smart City’ and he was asked about the decision taken by UEFA not to award the 2027 Champions League final to Milan, due to the uncertainty surrounding the stadium issue.

“I myself spoke to UEFA, because if they ask for a guarantee that there will be no work at San Siro, how can I give it? Pragmatically, there was no other way. Unless someone takes the responsibility of saying that it is impossible for there to be work there,” he said (via Calciomercato.com).

“But this would negate the path we are taking with Inter and Milan. After that, everything will depend on the path we are taking with the teams and we are working on this.”

Sala spoke about the rental contract between the Council, Inter and Milan for the San Siro stadium: “It has an expiry date of June 2030 and so it is clear that if they do not want to stay there they cannot assume that we will renew it for them.”

He concluded by warning the clubs that if they decide to build their stadiums in San Donato and Rozzano then they would have to get them done by the end of the rental contract period.

“They should be sure to have them ready for that date because we cannot be left holding the baby, but we must try to sell San Siro to the big concert promoters. Also because otherwise we could cause damage to a community asset, but if they want to renovate it, we are all happy.”
