Mauricio Pochettino admits Chelsea tried to sign USA international and explains why it failed | OneFootball

Former Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that he tried to sign a USA international whilst at Chelsea.

The former Tottenham and PSG boss also explained why the transfer failed at the time and did not go through.

It was actually quite a public story too at the time, although it did come from nowhere and I don’t think one single Chelsea fan was expecting it to appear like it did. It wasn’t exactly the most popular transfer story amongst the fan base, I do remember that.

But anyhow, Chelsea tried to sign midfielder Tyler Adams from Leeds United, but the transfer failed in the final stages.

Pochettino, who is now managing Adams in the USA national side after taking up the role of head coach there, has been speaking this week about this failed transfer move that didn’t happen in the end, with Adams then joining Bournemouth instead.

Pochettino reveals why Chelsea didn’t sign Adams

As cited on X this week, Pochettino said on Adams:

“I know very well him because I think it’s public that we wanted to sign him in Chelsea. When we arrived in Chelsea, I remember that in USA, in Chicago, we had a conversation.

“We knew and after, the club didn’t sign him because he was injured. That is why, in the end, we cannot but we already know and we know how important but we need to provide the good platform for him to get [to] his best.”

I’d actually personally heard that Adams had taken his Chelsea medical and it was almost all about to be done, so I am assuming with this info from Pochettino, that the player failed said medical and the transfer was unable to go through.

Chelsea signed Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo that summer, so I am sure there are no regrets there!
