Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League but were made to work for a point in a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa. It was a night of defensive uncertainty and missed opportunities for Arne Slot’s side, who saw Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold find the net but failed to maintain control.
From the outset, Villa were determined to make life difficult for Liverpool. The hosts thought they had taken the lead inside 20 minutes when Marcus Rashford’s cross was turned into his own net by Virgil van Dijk. However, the Manchester United loanee had strayed offside in the build-up, and the goal was correctly ruled out.
Despite that early warning, Liverpool struck first through Salah. A misplaced pass from Andres Garcia gifted possession to Diogo Jota, who found the Egyptian to slot home in the 29th minute. However, the visitors’ lead lasted just nine minutes. Rashford won a free-kick, and after Liverpool failed to clear their lines, Youri Tielemans capitalised to fire Villa level.

That set the tone for an open encounter, with both sides exploiting defensive frailties. Jota squandered a golden chance before Villa capitalised on the break. Lucas Digne’s pinpoint delivery was met by Ollie Watkins, whose header put Villa ahead deep into first-half stoppage time.
Slot’s men responded positively after the interval, and they were level again just after the hour mark. Jota, a constant menace, hit the bar before Salah set up Alexander-Arnold, whose low drive took a deflection and wrong-footed Emi Martinez.
The game remained finely poised, but Liverpool had the better chances to win it. Darwin Nunez, introduced from the bench, squandered the best opening when he somehow lifted the ball over the bar from five yards out. Villa then thought they had snatched victory late on when Jacob Ramsey converted, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

A draw extends Liverpool’s lead at the top to eight points, but with Arsenal having a game in hand and Manchester City awaiting Slot’s side at the Etihad next weekend, the battle at the summit remains finely balanced.
For Villa, it was a spirited performance that keeps them within reach of the top four, but Rashford’s arrival will need to yield more cutting-edge performances if they are to sustain a serious push for European qualification.
