Manchester City advanced to the Champions League semi-final after a battling draw away to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

Pep Guardiola’s men carried a 3-0 advantage into the game at the Allianz Arena after goals from Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland handed City victory in Manchester last week.

The match started fraught with Bayern on the front foot as they hunted down a goal to get them back into the tie.

Joao Cancelo, on loan at the German side from City, saw himself earn an early yellow card for a cynical challenge on his countryman Silva.

Another Bayern player who has played for City, Leroy Sane, then raced through on goal but his shot was dragged inches wide.

Dayot Upamecano was awarded a red card as he brought down Erling Haaland who was through on goal but the play was deemed to be offside and the card was rescinded.

City were then awarded a penalty for a handball by Upamecano but the spot kick was surprisingly skied by Haaland after a lengthy delay waiting to take it.

Then it was Bayern’s turn to attack and after a well worked move, Kingsley Coman fired straight at Ederson in the City goal.

Chaotic pinball ensued in the visitors’ box prior to the halftime whistle with Bayern seeing a flurry of shots being heroically blocked by City’s backline.

Following a coming together between the two captains which saw both Ilkay Gundogan and Joshua Kimmich be awarded a yellow card each, the two battling sides went into the break goalless.

Bayern started the second half like the first but still seemed uneasy in the final third.

Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland came forward in a rare counter attack but the Norwegian’s eventual shot was straight at Yann Sommer in the home goal.

Haaland took this personally and just a couple of minutes later, he surged forward from a De Bruyne through ball and made it count.

Facing down on goal, City’s star man allowed Upamecano to slip before he powered his shot past the despairing Sommer.

This gave Guardiola’s side the lead on the night and extended the aggregate score to 4-0, providing a hammer blow to the German champions.

The Citizens received a blow though in the form of an injury as one of their star performers of this season, Nathan Ake, went down with a suspected hamstring issue.

Aymeric Laporte was brought on to take over the left back position as the Dutchman departed the field of play grimacing.

Thomas Tuchel’s side thought they had pulled a goal back when Mathys Tel netted but Coman was adjudged to have been offside in the build-up.

In one of the most stupid decisions in recent football history, Munich were awarded a penalty after Manuel Akanji was adjudged to have handballed.

There is nothing the Swiss defender could have done and Kimmich beat Ederson from the spot to give Bayern a goal over the two legs.

Julian Alvarez then came on for the final five minutes, replacing goalscorer Haaland in the City attack.

The game finally got the red card it warranted as Bayern manager Tuchel was shown a yellow card for whinging to the referee.

Kyle Walker was brought on for De Bruyne in City’s final change as the Premier League champions closed out the result.

City advance to the semi-finals to face off against current holders Real Madrid in what is a repeat of last campaign.

Guardiola’s men will look to avenge their 3-1 loss that saw three late goals knock them out of the European competition in agonising fashion.
