Martin Dubravka experienced agony on Sunday.

With Slovakia having been the better team and leading from the 24th minute, with only 30 seconds to go of added time, the Newcastle United keeper beaten by that Jude Bellingham overhead kick.

It was the first England effort on target.

Moving into extra time, it only took seconds for Harry Kane to head home from close range after the ball had pinged around the Slovakia penalty area, before falling fortuitously for the England striker.

That goal proved the winning one and Martin Dubravka ended the last 16 knockout match not having made a single save, as the two goals were the only two efforts on target.

After that very unlucky exit from the Euros with Slovakia, Martin Dubravka then woke on Monday to news that the Greece number one keeper Odysseas Vlachodimos had signed for Newcastle United, which was quickly followed by another keeper, 37 year old John Ruddy, also signing on for NUFC.

Martin Dubravka now has less than 12 months left on his own Newcastle United contract and set to turn 36 in January, so what next? Nick Pope undoubtedly number one and two other goalkeepers arriving, as well as Mark Gillespie having already signed on for another year.

Martin Dubravka speaking to The Mail and asked what was now happening with his goalkeeping position at Newcastle United – 1 July 2024:

“I have seen they (Newcastle United) are talking with other goalkeepers.

“I need to speak with the manager first.

“What is the plan for me?

“What is my future?

“I don’t know if they want me to stay or not.

“It is difficult for me because I have been focussed on my job with the national team.”

I think a case of Martin Dubravka not telling the full story.

Long before the Euros kicked off, I don’t think anybody expected Martin Dubravka to still be at Newcastle United next season, least of all the goalkeeper himself probably.

Indeed, his agents held talks with Celtic ahead of the tournament and a number of other clubs reported to be interested in signing him.

After six and a half years of solid service to Newcastle United, it is now just a case of which club he moves to, not whether he is moving or staying at NUFC.

Interestingly, The Mail add that despite the signing of these two keepers on Monday, they understand that James Trafford could still potentially sign for Newcastle United in this window. The report saying that whilst United aren’t currently still in talks with the 21 year old keeper that Burnley allegedly turned down a £16m Newcastle bid for, that situation could become active again.

I can’t see how in any way John Ruddy would be second choice going into the new season, whilst plenty people willing to believe, especially Forest fans, that the signing of Odysseas Vlachodimos was overwhelmingly a favour to Nottingham Forest, in order to ensure that the £35m deal for Elliot Anderson was done before the PSR 30 June 2024 deadline passed.

So no great surprise if James Trafford, or another goalkeeper target, arrives this summer at Newcastle United, on top of the business so far.
