Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has been impressed with some of the transfer deals his old team have done, in particular the move to pick up Jadon Sancho from Manchester United.

That swoop was widely questioned – including by us – because of the winger’s struggles since moving to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund. But he’s picked up 6 goal contributions in 14 games, including one last weekend, and can really become one of the bargains of the season if he keeps performing.

“It was a great call from Maresca,” said Sutton in quotes picked up by LondonNewsOnline.

“I would have been one of those people who would have looked back at that particular time and had question marks of Sancho and his attitude at Manchester United. There had been a very public falling out with Erik ten Hag. Maresca went for him and it led to the end of Raheem Sterling,” Sutton continuted.

“It seemed to be the fit that Maresca wanted. I like the way he has been as forthright as he has been – he knows what he wants and what makes his team tick. I think Sancho has come in and feels loved. That’s a really important thing. He was always a talented player. He has been like a number of players at Manchester United over the years where things haven’t gone well and the toys came out of the pram a little bit with him.

“He’s gone to Chelsea and really hit the ground running. It’s a good bit of business.”

Maresca deserves credit for approving controversial move

We’re not sure how much praise Maresca himself should get for the deal, given it was likely all arranged by the sporting directors. But former Man City youth coach Maresca will have had close contacts who worked with Jadon, and perhaps he got the right indications to give the deal the green light.
