Speaking at a media round table (via kicker) as RB Leipzig returned to training following the winter break, head coach Marco Rose addressed the issue from the first half of the season.
On what happened during the analysis of the first six months at the end of the year, Rose said:
“We have gone through a lot of data and tried to create a qualitative analysis. And there are a few striking statistics that caught our eye and that we definitely want to work on, we are really self-critical about that. You can see that we have some catching up to do in some areas. We want to improve those again. If we improve them, then we will play well.”
Leipzig ended the year horribly, topped off by a 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich, compare that to the start of the season where they had one of the best defences in the league. On what they want to improve on heading into 2025, Rose said:
“We want to get back to our game against the ball. And we want to get better with the ball again. We want to get back to ourselves step by step.”
Injuries have been a massive issue for Leipzig so far this season. Luckily for them, Xavi Simons and David Raum have both returned from their injuries. However, Benjamin Henrichs will now be on the sidelines following an injury he picked up right at the end of the game against Bayern. Leipzig are already looking at a backup option for Henrichs, with Wolfsburg’s Ridle Baku linked. On whether they will be active in the market, Rose said:
“The winter transfer window is not an easy one. We will not block ourselves for the future, and yet we know that we may have to do something here and there.”
However, he did provide a clear statement on the current squad situation:
“At the moment we are already at the limit in this constellation.”
This has forced Rose to play players before they are fully fit, as seen with Castello Lukeba who reinjured himself in their 5-1 loss to Wolfsburg. Rose commented on if this was an issue:
“Perhaps we could have solved it differently, yes, but as a coach and manager of an ambitious Bundesliga club, you also know that in the end it’s all about results.”
Finally, Jürgen Klopp officially started his role as Red Bull Global Head of Soccer on Wednesday but does not start until next week. On if he has had any contact with his former manager, Rose said:
“I left Klopp alone, now the vacation is over, now it’s time to get started. We are looking forward to his network, his experience, and him as a person. For me as a coach it is of course very interesting to find out how he worked in Liverpool.”
Leipzig returns to Bundesliga action on January 12th when they face Werder Bremen at the Red Bull Arena.
