Manchester United are working on a deal to appoint Ruben Amorim as the club’s new head coach.

The Sporting Lisbon manager is the club’s top target to replace Erik ten Hag, who was sacked from his role on Monday.

United dismissed the Dutchman following the club’s worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign, with the Red Devils 14th in the Premier League table with just eight points from nine games.

Amorim is now the frontrunner to replace Ten Hag and The Athletic are reporting that talks have begun between United and the Portuguese champions.

United are prepared to pay the €10m release clause in the 39-year-old’s contract at the Estádio José Alvalade and Amorim is open to the move to the Premier League.

Amorim has been touted for a move to one of Europe’s top clubs following his impressive work at Sporting. He led the side to a first Primeira Liga title in 19 years in 2020/21 and added a second Portuguese title last season.

Barcelona, Chelsea and Liverpool have all considered the Portuguese coach previously, while Amorim has been linked with replacing Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, should the Spaniard not renew his contract. Guardiola’s contract expires at the end of the season and Sporting director of football Hugo Viana is set to move to the Etihad next summer.

Manchester United statement after sacking Erik ten Hag

“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.

“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
