The Red Devils have embarked on a post-season trip to Asia, where they will play two friendlies this week

Manchester United will contest the first of two post-season friendlies in Asia on Wednesday as Ruben Amorim aims to draw a line under his side’s “disaster” season. The Red Devils ended their 2024-25 Premier League campaign on a high with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, following last week’s crushing Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

Having named his 32-man squad for this week’s two-legged trip, Amorim will hope United’s matches against ASEAN All-Stars and the Hong Kong national team - who they face on Friday - end with better outcomes than their last appearance on foreign soil.

Wednesday’s opponents, initially formed by the ASEAN Football Federation in 2014 for a charity event to aid victims of Typhoon Haiyan the previous year, is hand-picked from Southeast Asia internationals and selected stars from the regional leagues.

ASEAN All-Stars have not played a match for over a decade, but a new group will suit up in Malaysia this week with Vietnam national team coach Kim Sang-sik at the helm. Billed as the Maybank Challenge Cup, the upcoming friendly will reportedly donate all proceeds to the Al-Sultan Abdullah Foundation, a local non-profit.

Marking United’s first visit to Malaysia since their 2009 pre-season tour, the trip is expected to generate upwards of £7m for the club.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Manchester United vs ASEAN All-Stars is scheduled for a 1:45pm BST (8:45pm local time) kick-off on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

The match will take place at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

Manchester United vs ASEAN All-Stars team news

The majority of United’s first-team squad were named in the 32-strong group making the trip to Malaysia and Hong Kong, including Alejandro Garnacho despite the Argentine reportedly having been told to find a new club.

Andre Onana and Luke Shaw are also travelling despite not featuring against Villa, but there is no room on the plane for Marcus Rashford.

Leny Yoro will remain in Manchester alongside fellow injured centre-back Lisandro Martinez as well as full-back Noussair Mazraoui, who failed to make it through the first half at the weekend.

Diogo Dalot was also withdrawn early on Sunday but has made the travelling squad, with Dutch internationals Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee also deemed fit.

The departing duo of Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen aren’t included, but outgoing veteran Jonny Evans is.

Joining the aforementioned players and other first-team regulars like Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo, Harry Maguire and Casemiro are youngsters including Harry Amass, Ayden Heaven, Chido Obi and several academy players.

Manchester United vs ASEAN All-Stars prediction

For all their struggles this season, United were the better team against Villa on Sunday, albeit while playing against 10 men for just over half of the match.

With this being a friendly, it’s unclear exactly how strong a starting XI will be fielded on Wednesday. Amorim will likely be looking to balance winning ambitions with some minutes for the youngsters in the group.

Garnacho’s inclusion in the squad might have raised some eyebrows given his apparent split from the manager and omission from the final domestic match of the season, but the reintegration of Mason Mount could continue amid early trials and experiments for next season.

No matter the approach, United’s hierarchy and fans will expect a relatively comfortable victory in Kuala Lumpur.
