Ruben Amorim’s arrival might spell the end of Joshua Zirkzee’s very brief Manchester United career, suggests reports in Italy.
United’s decision to sack Erik ten Hag and eventually replace him with Amorim just a few months into the new season has left question marks on their transfer business during the summer.
The Red Devils spent nearly £200 million on five senior signings during the summer transfer window and now it remains to be seen how they would fit into the Portuguese tactician’s plans.
As far as Zirkzee, who was signed from Bologna for a fee over £35m, is concerned, he is already understood to be counting his final days in Manchester.
The Dutch striker, who was seen as one of the most exciting attacking talents after a commendable season in Serie A, joined United despite strong interest from AC Milan and Juventus.
However, he has struggled to cope with English football’s pace and intensity, having managed just one goal in 15 appearances across all competitions.
The 23-year-old’s form as well as Ten Hag’s departure has raised uncertainty over his future at Old Trafford.
According to Calciomercato, Zirkzee is not part of Amorim’s plans, and the incoming manager “wants to rely on his own ideas” and bring his own attacking options.
Interestingly, the report also mentions Sporting CP talisman Viktor Gyökeres as Zirkzee’s potential replacement.
As such, a quick exit for the Netherlands international is possible, with Milan and Juventus mentioned as potential destinations.
However, it is suggested that a transfer is only possible if United are willing to part ways with him on loan.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Ten Hag “didn’t even want him” in the summer. INEOS signed Zirkzee without Ten Hag’s approval. Now, it remains to be seen if they will keep him against the wishes of their new manager.
