It is the most unexpected Manchester United transfer story of the year and the rate at which it is gaining pace would worry most United fans.

Manchester Evening News reports many players at the club doubt that Bruno Fernandes will be at Old Trafford next season.

Fernandes is reportedly open to a move after United took a huge step backwards this season, with Bayern Munich and Inter Milan interested in his services.

Despite coming under criticism for his sometimes erratic style of play and his outbursts of frustration, Fernandes has been the one constant source of goals and assists in a dysfunctional team.

He has previously been linked to the Saudi Pro League, with teams like Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr, and Al-Hilal all registering an interest in his services.

However, it always looked unlikely as Fernandes, who has only one Carabao Cup to show for his efforts at United, always seemed like a player who would chase major European trophies first.

As United struggle with a financial crisis and needing a squad to rebuild along with it, they are looking at Fernandes as a high-value asset they can potentially flip to reinvest elsewhere.

The report states that United do prefer to keep Fernandes, whose contract effectively runs till 2027 as the club holds a one-year option to extend.

Still, a lucrative offer from a European heavyweight is clearly a likelier possibility now than it was at the start of the season.

Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag has repeatedly stressed the importance of his captain but with his own future under question, it would be naive to take his words as gospel right now.

The mood around the camp is clearly low but if United lose their talismanic captain in the first window under the new INEOS leadership, fans are likely to be more grumpy than happy.
