Rio Ferdinand has explained why Chelsea can’t sack Mauricio Pochettino following the Blue’s heavy defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday night.

Pochettino is under huge pressure at Stamford Bridge and that intensified even further following the 5-0 loss at the Emirates.

Chelsea sit ninth in the Premier League with just six games left to play, and have failed to land any silverware for the second consecutive season.

Many expected the Blues to have an advantage over their rivals given they haven’t been in European competition, but that’s proven to be anything but the case.

The Blues heavily invested again last summer spending £434.5m on new signings, the most spent in a transfer window by any club in Premier League history.

Chelsea have now spent £1bn on new signings since Todd Boehly and Clearlake took over the club just under two years ago and have very little to show for it.

The Argentine has rightfully come in for criticism this season, with the club’s hierarchy also facing the wrath of Chelsea fans.

Manchester United legend Ferdinand believes the problems at the west London club go way beyond the manager.

“What I would say is that if you have spent a billion pounds on potential then you can’t sack the manager”,  Ferdinand told TNT Sports.

“I’m really interested to see how this summer goes in terms of the management situation.

“Mauricio Pochettino, when he gets an appraisal done at the end of the season, that will be one of the first things he says, ‘What do you expect? I have got one of the youngest squads around. I have invested in lots of potential. No real end product all over park’ , We were saying before, where is the experience?

“When there is a rocky moment in the game, where are the people and the characters that are going to drag the young players along?

“The main one, on the bench, was Thiago Silva but he is 38-years-old. They need to buy experience.”

Chelsea face a make or break next two games against Aston Villa and Tottenham, not only for their European hopes, but also for Pochettino’s future.
