Manchester United are currently in talks with Jonny Evans over a new deal to stay at the club he came through the youth ranks at.

It has been a busy week at Old Trafford as sporting director Dan Ashworth has finally been given the green light to start working at the club and Christopher Vivell has been hired as director of recruitment.

United have also been actively looking for a centre back as they have agreed personal terms with Jarrad Branthwaite and are making strong progress on a deal for Matthijs de Ligt, who is willing to take a pay cut to secure the move to team up again with his former boss, Erik ten Hag.

Free agent Tom Heaton has also signed a new deal and Sky Sports report that “talks are ongoing between Manchester United and Jonny Evans over a new one-year contract.”

It was thought that United would let both deals expire but clearly their experience and presence in the dressing room is considered too valuable to let go off.

It is unlikely that agreeing a deal with Evans will be hard work as he has spoken on his pride of returning to United last season and when on international duty with his nation at the start of June, he claimed he would have conversations with the club once he returned from Northern Ireland’s training camp in Spain.

In addition, the defender has been extremely vocal in his praise for Erik ten Hag, labelling him a “top class manager”, so it is likely that he will be even more keen to stay now the Dutchman has been confirmed to be shortly receiving a new deal.

It was relayed a few weeks ago that Evans was close to agreeing a new contract with the club and it seems like an announcement is not too far away, especially now a deal has been concluded for Heaton.

The Northern Ireland legend’s signing last summer was widely mocked but he has had the last laugh as he played 30 games for his boyhood club and rolled back the years with some standout displays, culminating in an FA Cup win in May.

His experience proved vital as the club suffered an unprecedented injury crisis and had to play with over 30 different back four combinations during the entire season.

With the likely signing of De Ligt and potentially another centre back being signed if one of Victor Lindelof or Harry Maguire are sold, Evans can probably expect to play significantly less than he ended up doing so last year.

It has been reported that the club will perhaps aim to ease him into a coaching role as Ten Hag has been impressed by his leadership and his interaction with younger players at the club.
