Manchester United confirm their worst-ever Premier League finish on final day of the season

They did their job, but so bad was the whole season that a final-day win couldn’t save Manchester United from their lowest-ever Premier League finish.

Despite winning 2-0 away at Brighton, Newcastle’s win at Brentford made sure that United wouldn’t just tie their lowest-ever finish of seventh, but set a new record altogether.

Going into the final matchday, United needed Newcastle to drop points while winning their own game to leapfrog them into seventh.

That would have tied with the finish in the 2013-14 season, the infamous David Moyes experiment which had Ryan Giggs in the dugout by the end.

However, the Magpies won 4-2 and so Erik ten Hag now replaces Moyes as the manager who engineered United’s worst league finish in the Premier League era.

With that, United have lost the chance to qualify for any European football whatsoever next season through the league.

Winning the FA Cup final will give them a Europa League place but they face the Manchester City juggernaut fresh from winning four titles on the bounce.

It has been one long nightmare for United fans with injuries and questionable tactics leaving the club lurching from one collapse to another.

What started as a season of hope, to build on last year’s third-place finish, quickly became a wait-and-watch disaster movie.

The manager is now under intense pressure to at least be extremely competitive in the final against City, if not outright winning it.

Anything less, and it would be a huge surprise to see Ten Hag in the dugout next season.

After all, previous managers at the club have been dismissed for a lot less, no matter the mitigating factors.
