Manchester United have confirmed John Murtough is to leave the club after 11 years.
Murtough, who has worked a variety of roles behind the scenes, has been United’s football director since 2021, but will now depart as part of the structural overhaul being undertaken by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS.
Speaking on the club’s website, co-owner Ratcliffe said: “We want to thank John for his loyal service over many years, and for his support and integrity during this period of transition. He leaves with our best wishes for the future.”
Murtough’s role as football director saw him play a crucial role in the appointment of Erik ten Hag as manager and several big-money signings. Previously, he had helped with academy recruitment, including the arrival of Alejandro Garnacho in 2020.
United are now expected to step up efforts to appoint both Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox in the coming weeks.
