Manchester City are not actively looking to sell Nico Gonzalez this summer, despite recent reports linking the midfielder with a potential move away.

Gonzalez, who arrived from FC Porto in January, was tipped for a breakout role under Pep Guardiola but found regular minutes hard to come by in his debut six months for the club.

Having featured mostly in cup competitions and making only a handful of appearances from the bench in the Premier League, his technical ability has drawn praise internally, although competition in midfield has limited his chances.

Earlier on Monday, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano suggested that Manchester City could be open to selling the Barcelona academy graduate if a good offer was made during the ongoing market.

The claim, which circulated widely on social media, positioned Nico Gonzalez as a player not seen as central to City’s long-term plans — fuelling talk of a summer departure.

That narrative has since been countered by a report from the Manchester Evening News’ Simon Bajkowski, who states that City are not looking to offload Gonzalez and expect him back at the club’s training base come the end of July.

As of now, no active negotiations are believed to be taking place regarding the player’s future.

The situation points to a familiar approach from City — keeping squad decisions fluid while maintaining control over player development. Gonzalez’s case mirrors that of several talents at the club who are monitored before decisions are made.

Should Gonzalez impress during training and immediate matches on the horizon, there is every chance he could carve out a more defined role heading into the new season and perhaps in life beyond some of the more seasoned veterans currently at the club.

From a fans’ perspective, keeping Nico Gonzalez in the squad makes sense, especially with the number of competitions City will be competing in during the 2025/26 campaign.

While not a guaranteed starter, the Spaniard offers depth and versatility, and at just 23 years old, still has significant potential to grow within Pep Guardiola’s system.

Unless a major bid arrives or Gonzalez himself pushes for a move, it now appears more likely that he will remain in Manchester this summer. What happens next will depend on his performance and attitude over the coming weeks — but for now, City’s message is clear: he stays.
