According to L’Équipe, Manchester City’s Jérémy Doku (21) is at the forefront of a group of players who have won a legal battle against Pannini and the UNFP over image rights at a Paris court today.
In 1985, the UNFP created a company called ‘Nouvelle Promo-Foot’ which allowed them to collect the image rights of players and use them in collective and commercial circumstances. This creation allowed them to sign a contract with Pannini which is worth €2.5m each year.
As a result of a lack of transparency regarding how these funds are used, 4 players including Doku and former Southampton defender Jérémy Pied launched a legal battle against the UNFP and Pannini opposing the use of their image rights without compensation.
With the final court hearing today, the court in Paris ruled in favour of Doku and the group of players who launched legal action. Therefore, ruling that UNFP did not own the image rights of the players it was selling to Pannini for sticker albums on a season-by-season basis.
