Manchester City host Newcastle United this weekend in a big game for both side’s top-four ambitions.
Fifth and sixth in the table, the teams are level on points ahead of their Etihad showdown. City are aiming to bounce back from their late heartbreak in Europe on Tuesday.
Despite leading with four minutes to go, Pep Guardiola’s side collapsed to lose 3-2 to Real Madrid. It leaves the Premier League champions with a huge task ahead of the return in Spain.
Newcastle head into the contest in optimistic mood. The Magpies have booked their place in the Carabao Cup final and progressed in the FA Cup last weekend. However, Newcastle have won just one of the last 14 meetings between the teams. Their last win at Manchester City in the Premier League came in September 2000.
Jack Grealish and Manuel Akanji are major doubts for the Citizens after sustaining injuries in midweek. The duo could join long-term absentee Rodri on the sidelines. However, Oscar Bobb and Nico Gonzalez are in contention to feature.
Guardiola will decide whether to select new signing Gonzalez in central midfield or continue with John Stones in the role. The centre-back was pushed forward during the clash with Real Madrid in midweek.
Jeremy Doku returned to the bench against Real Madrid and will compete with Omar Marmoush, Savinho and Phil Foden for a start.
Manchester City predicted XI: Ederson; Nunes, Stones, Dias, Gvardiol; Gonzalez, Kovacic; Savinho, Foden, Marmoush; Haaland.
Manchester City host Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday 15th February 2025. Kick-off at the Etihad is 15:00 GMT.
