Manchester City welcome Manchester United across town this weekend in the latest instalment of the Manchester Derby.
It’s a clash both teams head into in poor form. City have won just one of their last 10 in all competitions with Pep Guardiola facing a challenge to revive his side’s fortunes.
Defeat at Juventus in midweek leaves City battling to secure progress in Europe, while a gap has opened up between the champions and Premier League leaders. However, dropped points for Liverpool and Arsenal on Saturday offers encouragement. A win for City against their fiercest rivals will take Guardiola’s team within six points of the summit, heading into the festive period.
Guardiola has admitted he will have to reshuffle his pack defensively with the suspended Rico Lewis adding to the problems for the Citizens. The full-back was sent off in the draw at Crystal Palace last weekend and misses out through suspension. Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake and John Stones all remain out through injury. Academy graduates Jahmai Simpson-Pusey and Josh Wilson-Esbrand are options to come in and bolster the backline.
Rodri and Oscar Bobb are long-term absentees for City, with Guardiola admitting the former’s season-ending injury has been a major factor in his side’s struggles. The Ballon d’Or winner sustained an ACL injury in September.
Manchester City predicted XI: Ortega; Walker, Dias, Simpson-Pusey, Gvardiol; De Bruyne, Kovacic; Silva, Foden, Doku; Haaland.
