Premier League champions Manchester City have been named as the best football team in the world, following the emergence of new rankings of global football squads.

That is according to the Opta Power Rankings – a new global team ranking system that is said to “assign an ability score over 13,000 domestic football teams on a scale between zero and 100”, with zero being the worst-ranked in the world and 100 being the best.

As such, the system finally puts to bed ongoing debates between global football supporters as to who is the best team in the world, irrespective of who wins the continent and country’s major honours in recent seasons.

Manchester City have won almost everything there is to win in the game in the last two seasons alone, with only English football’s Carabao Cup evading Pep Guardiola and his players, despite the side claiming that title four times since 2018.

The 2022/23 season saw City win a historic Treble with successes in the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League, while the following campaign would see triumphs in the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and the Premier League once again.

Now, as per Opta’s brand new Power Rankings system, Manchester City have been labelled as the best team in world football, with a perfect ranking score of 100 out of a possible 100 – positioning themselves ahead of the reigning Champions of Europe, Real Madrid.

Opta’s Power Rankings: Top-10

  • Manchester City, 100.0
  • Real Madrid, 99.3
  • Arsenal, 96.3
  • Internazionale, 96.2
  • Bayer Leverkusen, 96.1
  • Barcelona, 95.8
  • Bayern Munich, 95.2
  • Liverpool, 95.1
  • Paris Saint-Germain, 95.1
  • Sporting CP, 93.8

Manchester City will be hoping to further reflect their status as the claimed best team in the world by once again winning the Premier League title this season, and mounting more serious challenges for the UEFA Champions League in particular.

City broke the record for the most English top-flight titles in a row last season, claiming the honour for a fourth successive season, whilst their hopes of retaining Europe’s premier club crown were ended by Real Madrid in a penalty shoot-out at the Etihad Stadium.
