One player who figures to have a bright future at Manchester City is Rico Lewis. The England international has served his apprenticeship as a City squad player and is now reaching an age where he figures to be a prominent player for Pep Guardiola’s side. Perhaps the next step in Lewis’s progression to become an important player for Manchester City will come during the 25/26 season. Next season does appear to be a big one for Rico Lewis. If Lewis can make the next step as a player he could become a critical member of the City first team.

It has been obvious that Pep Guardiola has a high opinion of Rico Lewis as a player. Now a new report indicates that Lewis is in talks with Manchester City over a contract extension. The City hierarchy appears intent on getting Lewis to commit his future to the club.

Manchester City see Rico Lewis as an important player in their future.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Rico Lewis and Manchester City have been in talks over a new contract for Lewis for some time. Furthermore, Romano reports that talks are set to intensify soon and that Pep Guardiola and Hugo Viana see Lewis as an important player in Manchester City’s future. Lastly, Romano adds that an improved salary will be offered to the England international.

Where Rico Lewis plays next season will be fascinating to watch unfold.

At times it is forgotten that Rico Lewis is only 20 years of age. It does feel like he has been a member of Pep Guardiola’s side for a lot longer. Lewis has predominantly played at right-back for Manchester City. But it has always seemed that he is destined for a midfield role. That is where the England international does his best work. His performance in Manchester City’s 2-nil win over Nottingham Forest in last season’s FA Cup semi-final was a reminder of this fact. Perhaps that is where Lewis will play next season. That does seem to be the natural progression for Lewis as a player.

But as of right now, it would seem that Lewis is set to play at right-back. Manchester City have Matheus Nunes and Rico Lewis for that position. Perhaps Lewis will move further up the pitch if City sign a new right-back. But if Lewis is to move into midfield players will have to leave Manchester City. Perhaps if Mateo Kovacic or Ilkay Gundogan for example leave that could facilitate Lewis’ move into midfield.

But wherever Rico Lewis is deployed by Pep Guardiola next season it is clear that he is an important part of Manchester City’s future. Manchester City’s intention to sign Rico Lewis to an improved contract illustrates this point.
