A major transfer window development has seen Manchester City turn to a former player as they map their goalkeeping options for the upcoming campaign.
The Blues have already added Marcus Bettinelli to their ranks in this transfer window from Chelsea after the departure of 39-year-old Scott Carson at the end of his contract at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City’s newly-appointed director of football Hugo Viana has wasted no time in laying down a marker since replacing Txiki Begiristain, securing the arrival(s) of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Bettinelli for the first-team.
City have also announced the signing of Norwegian midfielder Sverre Nypan on a five-year deal this week, with the 18-year-old expected to report for pre-season training with Pep Guardiola’s senior team as he awaits a decision on where he will be playing his football next season.
After addressing several squad frailties early on in the transfer window, goalkeeper is an area which is believed to be the next position that could be addressed by the Manchester City board as they look to progress a major squad revamp after a sub-standard 2024-25 campaign.
Ederson and Stefan Ortega Moreno are both entering the final year of their respective contracts – and both have been linked with possible moves away after an unconvincing year at Manchester City that saw the pair struggle and doubts appear over whether the Blues are in safe hands with the duo for the years to come.
Guardiola is expecting the pair to stay put into the new season, though it is well-documented that Ederson remains open to a move away from the Etihad Stadium despite having rebuffed suggestions on social media recently that he is actively seeking an exit this summer.
The Brazilian wanted to move to Saudi Arabia last summer and a move failed to materialise owing to the failure of any suitor club matching Manchester City’s valuation of the 31-year-old – which is believed to be in the region of £50 million.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Manchester City have made contact with former goalkeeper James Trafford – now playing at Burnley – over a return to the Etihad Stadium this summer – in the event that one of Ederson or Stefan Ortega Moreno leaves the club ahead of the new season.
With Ederson likely to stay going off what the Brazilian and Guardiola have said on his future, it appears that the door now might be open for Ortega Moreno – who has attracted interest from Germany – to leave Manchester City this summer.
The German refused to rule out a move away from the Etihad Stadium whilst on international duty earlier this year and should an attractive offer present itself for the 32-year-old that would guarantee him regular first-team football, City would need another new shotstopper this summer.
Trafford, 22, has enjoyed a breakthrough spell at Burnley, where he was brought in by former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany during his time at Clarets boss – and it would be quite the full circle moment for the now-experienced City academy graduate to return, which would be facilitated by the existence of a buyback clause in Trafford’s Burnley contract.
