Manchester United have endured a turbulent season, leaving the futures of several key players hanging in the balance.
Among those under scrutiny is goalkeeper Andre Onana, whose performances have fallen well short of expectations.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United manager Ruben Amorim wants to sign a new goalkeeper, but Onana is eager to stay with the club.
The Cameroon international arrived from Inter Milan in a high-profile £47 million transfer and was expected to be the club’s long-term solution in goal.
He replaced David de Gea, who had been a rock between the sticks for United for over a decade.
De Gea repeatedly produced countless breathtaking saves to rescue United, but former manager Erik ten Hag sought a goalkeeper more comfortable with the ball at his feet.
The United hierarchy backed him by signing Onana in the hope that he could help the team play out from the back and act as a sweeper-keeper when needed.
If the Red Devils opt to offload Onana this summer, they must recover at least £28m to steer clear of a financial loss under the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.
The last time United outright sold their first-choice goalkeeper was in 1978.
If they choose to part ways with Onana, he would become the first number one to be sold in 47 years, making it an exceptionally rare decision for the club.
The 28-year-old made bold promises when he signed for the club, but costly blunders have marred his 18-month stint at Old Trafford.
