Not only top players but a lot of promising coaches have also cut their teeth at Carrington before going on to manage big clubs in the English football pyramid.

David Hughes, currently the assistant U21 coach at United, is open to moving on after two years at the club and is ready to take his first steps in management.

His skills are widely regarded and a number of EFL clubs are keen with League One side Bolton Wanderers seemingly in pole position for his services.

U21 coach to leave

The 46-year-old joined after a successful spell with the Cardiff City academy and under his tutelage at Carrington, the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo and now, Toby Collyer have all become first-team stars.

The report also mentioned that the coach’s representatives are working hard to get Hughes a top-level job as soon as possible and they are in talks with multiple interested parties.

“Manchester United under-21s coach David Hughes is ready to leave his role at Old Trafford and take on a management role at a new club, TEAMtalk can exclusively reveal.

“Hughes, 46, is viewed as a top talent by those behind the scenes at Old Trafford and we understand that he is being eyed up by a number of sides. Sources close to the situation have informed us that Hughes feels he is ready to take the step into management.

Bolton eyeing Hughes

“Hughes is a name to watch in the coming weeks as a number of clubs in the Football League are considering making changes, with Bolton Wanderers among them.

“Sources have informed TEAMtalk that Hughes would be open to holding talks with Bolton over the prospect of becoming their new manager, should Evatt leave the club.”

The Welsh coach has previous experience as head of academy coaching at Birmingham and is well regarded within the INEOS hierarchy.

However, with Hughes looking to leave, United are unlikely to stand in his way just as they allowed McKenna and Michael Carrick to depart.
