Nottingham Forest 1 – 1 Liverpool – Premier League Man of the Match

Ryan Gravenberch

As the season advances beyond the Christmas period and into 2025, each match will contribute to identifying the eventual Premier League champion. Nottingham Forest, defying expectations, hosted this thrilling encounter between two historic English clubs. They began the game sitting in third place in the table, while Liverpool held a six-point lead at the top, clear of second-placed Arsenal.

Both managers, Arne Slot and Nuno Espírito Santo, are vying for the season’s Manager of the Year award, and the players representing them on the City Ground pitch were keen to make an impact. Key players were bound to influence the match’s outcome, particularly for the hosts, where goalkeeper Matz Sels and dominant central defender Murillo were crucial.

For Liverpool, standout performances came from Diogo Jota, Virgil van Dijk, and my Man of the Match, Ryan Gravenberch. Against a combative and aggressive Nottingham Forest team, Gravenberch shone with his physicality and intelligent play on the ball. His determination to cover ground and support his teammates was evident as he transitioned from midfield to defence while still contributing positively in the attacking third.

Although Gravenberch may not be Liverpool’s player of the season, he is undoubtedly the most improved player within the squad. The former Bayern Munich midfielder is eager to establish himself in the team this season, consistently impressing with his ability to become a long-term asset for the Merseyside Giants. Standing at 6 feet 3 inches tall, he never shied away from the physicality of the match and combined his evident footballing talent with grit and determination. Should Liverpool secure their 20th English league title, they will certainly reflect on matches like these as pivotal moments in their campaign.

Next up comes a trip to Brentford where another Ryan Gravenberch masterclass will be needed to ensure a positive result. With a six point gap to Nottingham Forest and a seven point advantage over Arsenal, this result at the City Ground must be commended, however, the need to starter quicker and dispel the hopes of the Reds opponents must be engineered, starting with another away day at the weekend.

Steven Smith’s Pre-match Prediction:

Nottingham Forest 1 – 2 Liverpool
