Man City reacted to the accusations by saying they were 'surprised' and 'welcomes the review of this matter.'

What have Man City done wrong?

While the specifics of the breaches are yet to be named, we have an idea of the nature of Man City's wrongdoings.

In November 2018, German newspaper Der Spiegel published leaked documents alleging "City inflated the value of a sponsorship deal and deliberately misled Uefa so they could meet FFP rules which require clubs to break even."

Following the allegations, Uefa investigated and later ruled that City committed "serious breaches" of FFP regulations between 2012 and 2016.

But their punishment of a two-year ban from European competitions was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Man City claimed that the allegations stemmed from "illegal hacking and out of context publication of City emails".

But what did those emails say?

Well, following City's latest accusation, a thread has gone viral resharing those leaked emails. They explain exactly what is being said in each one.

Thread explains Man City's 'leaked emails'

The thread, produced by @AdamJoseph____ shows a series of leaked emails and begins: "The next time a Manchester City fan mentions innocence etc, remind them there's pages upon pages to show otherwise. Here's a quick explainer on some of them."

1.

"Like this which is rerouting money through multiple companies rather than direct via ADUG (Abu Dhabi United Group)"

2.

"Here Graham Wallace mentions to Simon Pearce Manchester City will need to demonstrate commercial income from multiple partners (in this case, 4) so rather than be sent a lump sum from Abu Dhabi it needs to be sent from elsewhere to avoid being caught depositing owner equity."

3.

"Graham & Simon at it again. With £67m needing to be distributed via multiple tranches (in this case, bank accounts) & dates so that they can be identified as commercial funding rather than what it is - more owner equity."

4.

"Andy gets a turn! Requesting from Simon that £42m be paid through 'Etihad' & 'Etisalat' & be routed through them as previous auditors to avoid any questions about which channels they are coming through."

5.

"Here's some straight up collusion & accounting fraud. As this relates to owner investment, that's why they are looking to exclude sponsor funding from the accounts they are distributing. So they're providing one set of accounts externally that don't match the actual accounts."

6.

"This isn't as drastic as the others, but it just made me laugh reading it. Simon: 'We need to be cleaner than this. When we make a mistake like this we need to clean it immediately otherwise we will complicate things down the line and make my life difficult!'"

7.

"Jorge welcome to the party! Cleaning up the accounts here, basically making it clear that sponsor money was due, but ADUG needed to front the bill for them £50.5m so that it looks like ADTCA, Aabar & Etisalat look like they are funding things. Just Sugar Daddy things."

8.

"When you're colluding to get state owned funds through as sponsorship, you want to make sure you're on the same page. Gotta get that money from ADUG into City Football Group correctly! Good job by you, Jorge, Simon & come on down Ferran Soriano!"

9.

"A golden nugget I don't think I've seen many, if any talk about. In 2015, an email from Jorge to Simon & Ferran mentions 'full payment for Pogba transfer in August instead of 50%, or higher transfer'. ADUG always there to help out! What's all this then, @paulpogba?"

10.

"Hey come on now everyone, Manchester City were getting sponsorship after all. £67.5m Etihad deal wasn't all funded by Abu Dhabi, £8m is coming from Etihad! That's not too bad! That'll pay Erling Haaland for about 2 months..."

11.

"Evidence for days. Got to make sure the sponsors money via ADUG coming's in! They've given us plenty of detail. 'I know we don't necessarily need the money' - no s**t, Andy."

Fans react to thread on Man City's 'leaked emails'

After seeing the thread, football fans are pretty shocked:

It's worth noting that CAS ruled that "most of the alleged breaches reported by the adjudicatory chamber of the CFCB were either not established or time-barred".

The Premier League don't have those same 'time-barred' regulations.

Whether or not they can prove the evidence of these 'leaked' emails is another matter entirely.
