Man City Injury News: Updates on Rodri, Phil Foden and Ederson

Manchester City began the new Premier League campaign with a statement victory, brushing Wolves aside 4-0 at Molineux. Pep Guardiola’s team looked sharp despite being without several key players, including Rodri, Phil Foden and Ederson. For a side chasing yet another title, the condition of these players will be closely monitored in the coming weeks.

Rodri Edging Towards a Return

Rodri’s absence continues to be a concern. The midfielder missed much of last season following an ACL injury and then suffered another setback during the Club World Cup. Guardiola admitted after the Al-Hilal defeat that the Spaniard had sustained a “big injury”.

Rodri was in the stands for City’s opening league fixture and Guardiola has been cautious about his recovery timetable. Speaking before the Wolves game, he said he hopes Rodri will be “really fit… hopefully after the international break”. He added: “Hopefully in these games, he can play some minutes, but what is important is that he doesn’t have pain because we don’t want him coming back injured. We will try desperately to avoid that.”

City face Tottenham at the Etihad before a trip to Brighton, and while a starting place for Rodri may be unlikely, an appearance from the bench cannot be ruled out. His influence in midfield remains essential for City’s rhythm and balance.

Phil Foden Progressing After Ankle Issue

Phil Foden was also unavailable for the opening weekend. The England international had been left out of City’s pre-season trip to Palermo due to a minor ankle problem. Guardiola explained, “Phil was doing really good but he had a problem with a knock on his ankle that’s why as a precaution we did it.”

Foden joined Rodri in the stands at Molineux, suggesting his setback was not severe. His mobility around the ground was a positive sign and the expectation is that he will be back in contention against Spurs. If so, his creativity and dynamism could be vital in a fixture that often proves pivotal in the title race.

Ederson Recovery and Transfer Speculation

Ederson missed the Wolves match due to gastroenteritis, with James Trafford stepping in on debut and Stefan Ortega covering from the bench. While the Brazilian is usually a reliable presence, his absence coincided with reports suggesting he is considering a move away from Manchester.

According to Fabrizio Romano, “advanced talks” are underway between City and Galatasaray, although Guardiola’s side are said to want more for their goalkeeper. At the same time, speculation has linked PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma with a switch to the Etihad.

If illness was the only issue, Ederson should be ready for Spurs. However, the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future will be an additional subplot to watch in the coming days.

Outlook for Guardiola’s Squad

While Savinho, Mateo Kovacic and Claudio Echeverri are also on the sidelines, the imminent returns of Rodri and Phil Foden would give Guardiola welcome options. City have coped well in their absence, yet competing on multiple fronts demands depth and fitness across the squad.

With Tottenham visiting this weekend, Guardiola may have at least two of his most trusted players back in contention. The recovery of Rodri, in particular, will be crucial for City’s midfield stability, while Foden’s creativity offers a cutting edge.
