Man City hitting form just in time

After Tuesday night’s last-gasp win over Aston Villa, it feels like Manchester City might just be finding their groove again.
Matheus Nunes’ stoppage-time strike sealed a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium, arriving in the 93rd minute and 21 seconds - City’s latest match-winning goal at home since November 2022, when Erling Haaland struck against Fulham at 94:34.
More importantly, the result could be massive in the race for a Champions League spot. It lifts City up to third in the Premier League, one point ahead of Nottingham Forest in fourth and two clear of Newcastle in fifth.
With five places up for grabs in the Champions League this season, it’s a tight squeeze at the top. Villa stay seventh, while Chelsea are level with them on 57 points in sixth place, just two off the top five. One bad result could shake everything up, so every win is priceless right now.
And while they’ve not always looked at their best this year, the numbers tell a story of a team quietly clicking into gear. Since the start of 2025, only Liverpool have picked up more points (34) than City’s 30, and no one’s scored more goals (34).
At home, the Etihad is still a fortress – well, sort of. City have bagged 36 points there, second only to Liverpool again (41), and they’ve scored more goals at home than anyone else – 39 so far.
But it’s not all sunshine. Defensively, there’s been a few too many wobbles. They’ve conceded 22 goals at the Etihad in the league, which is their worst home defensive record since 2003/04 – their first season at the ground – when they let in 24.
Now, all eyes turn to Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley against Forest – a chance to book a place in the final and keep hopes of silverware alive. But the bigger picture is that City are finding form when it matters most.
