Luka Modric was in focus this weekend as the midfielder produced a masterful display of skill and technique in Croatia’s win over Poland.

The 39-year-old midfielder played the entire ninety minutes of the UEFA Nations League encounter, helping his nation secure a narrow 1-0 victory.

Modric’s performance on the night was outstanding as he scored the winner while maintaining a pass completion rate of 94%.

The Real Madrid star also created five chances, thus emerging as one of Croatia’s prime sources of creativity.

Modric on his future

Speaking to the media after the game, though, Modric was asked about the prospect of retirement.

The Real Madrid star offered a rather diplomatic response, suggesting that he is taking each game individually.

“With me, you never know. We have to take it game by game. I can’t think about the future. When I no longer feel the fire in me, I’ll retire. Only I can feel that fire and make the decision,” Modric said (h/t Fabrizio Romano).

However, many would agree Croat’s performance against Poland was an indicator that the midfielder has yet to show any signs of slowing down.

While Modric has witnessed an obvious decline in regard to his fitness and athleticism, he still remains a creative maestro in midfield. He also remains hungry for more silverware going forward.

Keeping that in mind, there is a possibility Modric might consider continuing his career, at least until the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

As far as his Real Madrid career is concerned, his contract does expire at the end of the season and everything does indicate this is going to be his last season at Santiago Bernabeu, though everything will depend on how the club finish the campaign.
