The Croat’s decision to leave marks the end of an era at the Bernabeu

Luka Modric has confirmed that he will leave Real Madrid when his contract expires after the Club World Cup.

It had been reported that Modric, a talented central midfielder with 186 senior caps for Croatia, did not want to leave Real, but that little progress had been made in contract renewal talks.

He will bid farewell to the Bernabeu on Saturday as Los Blancos host Real Sociedad in what will be his 591st appearance for the club. He will turn 40 in September, but continues to play a key role for the club, making 39 appearances in all competitions this season as Real made their way towards a second-place finish in La Liga, also missing out on silverware in the Champions League and Copa del Rey.

The 39-year-old confirmed his decision in a heartfelt letter to the club’s supporters.

He wrote on Instagram: “The time has come. The time I never wanted to come, but that's football, and in life everything has a beginning and an end. On Saturday, I'll play my last game at the Santiago Bernabéu.

“Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a footballer and as a person. I'm proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history.

“Over these years, I've experienced incredible moments, comebacks that seemed impossible, finals, celebrations, and magical nights at the Bernabéu. We've won everything, and I've been very happy. Very, very happy.

“I'm leaving with a full heart. Full of pride, gratitude, and indelible memories. And although, after the Club World Cup, I won't wear this shirt on the pitch again, I will always be a Real Madrid fan.

“We will meet again. Real Madrid will always be my home. For life.”

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez thanked Modric for his efforts: “Luka Modrić will forever remain in the hearts of all madridistas as a unique and exemplary footballer who has always embodied the values of Real Madrid. His football has captured the imagination of Madridismo and fans all over the world. His legacy will live on forever."

The player’s next steps are not yet clear, though he is expected to continue his playing career. His services will be highly sought after on a free transfer, as he remains one of Europe’s best midfielders despite his age.

Earlier this season, he became part of the Swansea City ownership group.
