Lucas Vazquez is playing his final few matches at Real Madrid, with the right-back’s contract set to expire in the coming days.

The 33-year-old veteran will depart once the FIFA Club World Cup is over and will hope to sign off on a high by lifting a trophy.

Ahead of the game against RB Salzburg, the Spanish right-back addressed the media where he discussed several topics, including his future.

During the chat, Vazquez was all praise for Real Madrid new signing Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose arrival has meant that the veteran has not played much at the Club World Cup.

“Trent has been a great player for many years. He can contribute a lot to Real Madrid, and I hope he does very well,” he said.

Talking about Vinicius Jr., who has had a quiet start to the Club World Cup so far, Vazquez remarked:

“I see Vinicius very happy, content, enjoying what he loves most, which is playing football. He deserves peace and quiet and for us to let him play, to enjoy him a little bit.”

The veteran right-back also touched upon the situation of Raul Asencio, who has endured a torrid start to the Club World Cup, giving away a penalty against Al-Hilal and then getting a red card vs Pachuca.

“Football can be quite cruel sometimes. He’s had two tough matches. But he’s shown his level, which has been brutal, what a player he is, and we’re happy to have him,” he insisted.

Vazquez also discussed the change of coaches as Xabi Alonso has taken over from Carlo Ancelotti, and how it had impacted the players, saying:

“We’ve been used to Carlo’s method for four years, now Xabi arrives with his own style and way of seeing football. Little by little, we’re seeing that we’re transferring his idea of the game to the pitch, and we want to keep improving.”

Regarding the match against RB Salzburg, Vazquez insisted that it will be a good test for Real Madrid against an UCL opponent.

“I think it’s going to be a tough match against an opponent we’ve faced in the Champions League. It’ll be a good test for us, and we’re going in with the hope of getting a win,” he noted.

“Real Madrid always goes out to win, and we’re coming to Philadelphia to get the three points.”

When asked about what the future holds for him, Vazquez opted to play his cards close to his chest, saying:

There’ll be time to talk about that. I’m really enjoying this World Cup. It’s a very beautiful competition. We’re all motivated to win it.

“As for my future…, we’ll see when it’s over. Let’s see, now’s not the time to talk about my future. There’ll be time for that, and I’m only focused on the Club World Cup.”

On having had to bid farewell to the Santiago Bernabeu, the exit-bound Real Madrid captain said:

“It’s been ten years since I’ve been at this stadium, even as a fan. I’ve been able to experience an impressive history in the club.”
