Julen Lopetegui has opened up, once again, about his failed move to AC Milan ahead of the current season. He labelled the Rossoneri’s situation ‘an internal war’.

Before Milan opted for Paulo Fonseca, Lopetegui appeared to be the primary target and talks were even at an advanced stage at one point. However, a strong reaction from the fan base caused the Rossoneri management to opt against hiring the Spanish manager.

Lopetegui ended up joining West Ham instead, a position he held for six months after he was sacked, due to a points average of just 1.18 per game. The Hammers haven’t done much better since, though, and the manager spoke about the situation in an interview with the Spanish outlet AS.

In addition to talking about the Premier League experience, he shared a few words on the failed move to Milan: “It was difficult and strange to understand. It wasn’t something to do with me, but rather an internal war going on there,” he began.

The legendary manager Arrigo Sacchi recently said Milan should have continued with Lopetegui, something the latter appreciated: “The words surprised me, and I appreciate them. What he meant was that a professional’s decisions can’t be changed by the noise of a non-professional group. In fact, he used himself and Berlusconi as examples. I share that sentiment,” he concluded.

Seeing how things have panned out, it’s clear that Milan need to improve as an organisation, setting clear responsibilities for each key member of the management.
