Sofia Jakobsson netted the winning goal as London City Lionesses moved to the top of the Barclays Women’s Championship table with a 2-1 win at Newcastle United this afternoon.

Beth Lumsden had cancelled out Izzy Goodwin’s early strike, but Jakobsson’s curler proved enough to deal the hosts only a second home defeat in the league and sent the visitors to the summit.

Both sides flew out of the traps. Shania Hayles was denied by visiting keeper Emily Orman inside 35 seconds before Goodwin pounced at the other end, sending a snapshot into the corner for the opener after three minutes.

Newcastle United took control soon after. Lumsden tested Orman at the back post, as the hosts continued to probe for a way through.

They found it in the 32nd minute. Hayles won possession and Emily Murphy picked up the ball. She drove forward and threaded a pass through to Lumsden on the right, who made no mistake.

Back came the visitors, who showed why they are in pole position for promotion. Jakobsson picked the ball up on the left, committed the full-back, and skipped inside before curling a lovely effort into the far corner.

Lumsden forced another save from Orman after the break with a powerful free-kick after Claudia Moan had saved low from Goodwin at the opposite end. Murphy then tried her luck following a strong run through the centre, but her drive flew over the top.

The second half proved far less fluent than the first, partly due to the visitors slowing the game down at every opportunity.

Lumsden crashed a free-kick against the bar in stoppage time, but there was no way through for The Magpies as opponents London City Lionesses claimed the win which takes them to the top of the table.

Newcastle United return to action when they host Blackburn Rovers at Kingston Park on Sunday 13 April 2025, while London City Lionesses’ next fixture is at Southampton on Good Friday.
