Liverpool’s Forward Line: What’s Next for The Attack

Liverpool’s attacking options remain a constant topic of discussion, with Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Mo Salah all playing roles in Arne Slot’s side. On the latest episode of the Media Matters Podcast for Anfield Index, Daily Mail journalist Lewis Steele joined Dave Davis to dissect Liverpool’s forward line, the future of key players, and the club’s plans moving forward.

Liverpool’s Attack: Strength in Depth but Questions Remain

Liverpool’s frontline is stacked with talent, but as Steele pointed out, “Liverpool probably should have more goals to show for the amount of chances they create.” Darwin Nunez, in particular, remains a divisive figure. “Nunez is fascinating. The numbers suggest he should be more prolific, but then you watch him and he’s so involved, always a threat,” Steele observed.

Diogo Jota’s return from injury has been a major boost. “Jota has that instinct. You put him in a situation, and he just knows where the ball will land,” Steele said.

Gakpo and Diaz: Form, Injuries and Expectations

Cody Gakpo’s role has been a point of discussion, with Steele acknowledging that injuries have played a part in his inconsistent form. “As I said earlier, Gakpo’s been injured, and that’s affected his rhythm,” he explained. While his versatility has been praised, questions remain over whether he fits into Slot’s long-term plans.

Meanwhile, Luis Diaz continues to be a crucial figure, though his end product has been under scrutiny. “He’s an electric player, but there’s a sense that he could be even more clinical in front of goal,” Steele noted.

Mo Salah’s Future and Liverpool’s Summer Plans

Mo Salah remains Liverpool’s talisman, but speculation over his long-term future refuses to fade. “And obviously Mo Salah—his situation will always be a talking point,” Steele remarked. With the Saudi Pro League maintaining interest, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will fend off another approach in the summer.

As for Liverpool’s transfer strategy, Steele emphasised the club’s careful planning. “It’ll be a big summer for Liverpool. There’s always the need to refresh, but it’s about getting the right profiles in,” he said.

Arne Slot’s Challenge and What’s Next

With Arne Slot now at the helm, Liverpool’s attacking dynamics may evolve further. “And you talked about Arne Slot… this is a big opportunity for him to put his stamp on the squad,” Steele pointed out.

For now, Liverpool’s forwards remain a key component of their ambitions, but as the summer window approaches, decisions will need to be made.
