Liverpool’s ongoing contract saga with Virgil van Dijk has taken another twist. Despite reported interest from the Saudi Pro League, the Dutchman appears to have no intention of making the switch. According to an exclusive from 365Scores, a Saudi official has confirmed:
“Van Dijk rejected all offers made to him by the Saudi league in the last period. We learned from those close to Van Dijk that his first desire is to continue in Europe after the end of his contract with Liverpool, so the idea of him coming has been ruled out now but all possibilities remain.”
This development may come as a relief to Liverpool supporters, but it does little to resolve the wider uncertainty surrounding the club’s future plans.
Van Dijk’s contract is only one piece of a complicated puzzle. With his deal expiring in June 2025, talks over an extension have stalled, primarily due to financial concerns. Liverpool’s reluctance to commit to a lucrative long-term deal is understandable—the Dutchman will turn 34 in July. However, his performances this season suggest he remains one of the Premier League’s most dominant defenders.
With 28 appearances, eight clean sheets, and a league-best 4.3 aerial duels won per game, Van Dijk’s form is undeniable. His leadership and composure remain vital, particularly in a squad that is set to undergo significant transition under Arne Slot.
Van Dijk is not the only key player facing contract uncertainty. Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have also received offers, but reports suggest the terms do not yet meet expectations.

Alexander-Arnold’s case is particularly delicate. With Real Madrid monitoring his situation, Liverpool must tread carefully. As vice-captain and a homegrown talent, his retention is as much about identity as ability. Meanwhile, Salah’s £350,000-a-week wages complicate any negotiations, given the need to maintain a sustainable wage structure.
Liverpool must decide how far they are willing to stretch financially to secure their core players while ensuring they remain competitive in the long run.
The message from Van Dijk’s camp seems clear—he wants to stay in Europe. Whether that means extending at Liverpool or exploring another elite club remains to be seen. What is evident is that Liverpool are at a crossroads.
With their current wage hierarchy—Salah (£350k per week), Van Dijk (£220k), and Alexander-Arnold (£180k)—any new deal must be structured carefully.
At this stage, Van Dijk appears the most likely of the three to stay. But Liverpool fans have seen enough transfer sagas to know nothing is certain until pen meets paper.
For Liverpool fans, Van Dijk staying in Europe is great news—but does it mean he’s staying at Anfield? That’s the real question.
While his performances this season have been outstanding, there’s still a lingering concern about offering a long-term deal to a player who will be 34 next season. If the club is stalling over financial terms, they may be considering a succession plan, even if they won’t admit it publicly.
As for Alexander-Arnold and Salah, their situations feel more precarious. Losing either would be a hammer blow, but Real Madrid’s interest in Trent is a worry, especially given how aggressive the Spanish giants can be in the transfer market.
Liverpool’s recruitment team must act swiftly. If Van Dijk stays, he offers stability. If he leaves, a new defensive leader must be found—and that won’t be easy.
One thing’s for sure: this summer will be pivotal for Liverpool’s future.
