One Liverpool wonderkid is now set for a big role in pre-season after nearing a new contract at the club as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.

It’s a new era at Anfield and the new era will see Richard Hughes finally create the Reds in Arne Slot’s own image.

This will require a trimming down of the excess in the team and the arrival of new super talents like Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez.

But Slot’s team is still expected to be bulked up by emerging young players from the club’s academy.

For these young players, pre-season will present a massive opportunity to make their mark.

The notable names include the likes of Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni, who are both going to be on the tour.

But there’s a new name as well who is set to introduce himself to Liverpool supporters.

Wellity Lucky’s name has earned a bit of notoriety recently.

The Spanish youth international’s contract saga at Liverpool was spoken about Fabrizio Romano, who has since confirmed Lucky is expected to sign a new four-year deal at the club which has already been offered to him by the Reds.

That’s despite several European sides being interested in him according to Romano.

Liverpool however seems to have been keen to keep him at the club. So, it’s great news that Lucky is likely to stay and now he should get a chance to showcase his talent in the first team as well.

That’s because Liverpool’s centre-back options will be scarce come the start of pre-season.

Joe Gomez is still nursing an injury and he could leave as well. Jarell Quansah won’t be at the start of pre-season because of his England U21 duties but he likely won’t be at the club very long either, with Bayer Leverkusen closing in on his signature.

That leaves Lucky a good chance to earn himself a call-up to the first team, especially if that new deal is signed.

He’s already been on Slot’s radar last season. Lucky participated in some training sessions, including ahead of the Reds tie against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.

But he’s yet to make an appearance for the first team in friendlies and competitive games and now could be his time to shine.

At 19-years-old he’s still very young for a centre-back and he’s shown in the Premier League 2, he would be well-suited to Slot’s style of play.

Lucky is a composed centre-back. He’s very comfortable on the ball and good at making progressive passes into the opposition’s final third.

He’s also very good at not losing the ball averaging 93% pass completion at all levels for the academy last season.

Combined that with a strong body for his age, capable of standing up in difficult duels even in Liverpool’s EFL Trophy matches as well as being relatively quick and Lucky has all the essential ingredients to suit Slot’s style of play.

It helps that he can also play as a right-back, making him a very versatile asset to have in the squad.

We expect Lucky to be heavily involved in pre-season so he’s a name to keep an eye on.
