Federico Chiesa at Liverpool: A Signing That’s Yet to Deliver?

Manchester United  attempted to lure Federico Chiesa from Juventus to Old Trafford in the summer as Erik ten Hag sought late attacking reinforcements, suggest reports by The Express. However, by the deadline, the 27-year-old winger was a Liverpool player, joining in an initial £10 million deal that, at the time, seemed a bargain.

Arne Slot looked to have added an established international with 73 career goals to his ranks for a cut-price fee. Yet, the injury-plagued months that followed have raised questions about whether Juventus were happy to offload the versatile forward for a reason. His time at Anfield has been disrupted, with Liverpool fans eagerly waiting to see the best of the Italian winger.

Chiesa’s Journey to Anfield

In August, Italian outlet Sport claimed that both United and Chelsea had tabled offers for Chiesa’s signature. It appears Liverpool swooped in decisively, with Arne Slot keen to strengthen his attacking options.

Chiesa’s early struggles have not gone unnoticed. His minutes have been limited, having made just one Premier League appearance this season — an 18-minute cameo in the 3-0 victory over Bournemouth in September. A muscle injury sidelined him for two months before his return against Southampton last month.

Despite these setbacks, Chiesa’s potential remains undeniable. His return to the Liverpool bench for the Manchester United clash could be pivotal. His absence from the travelling squad in the 5-0 win at West Ham United last time out hints at a cautious approach from Slot.

United’s Missed Opportunity?

United and Chelsea fans may be left pondering what could have been. The Red Devils’ ongoing struggles in front of goal have added to the sense of regret, particularly if Chiesa makes an impact at Anfield.

Liverpool forwards will fancy their chances when United visit Merseyside, given the bitter rivals’ results in recent years. Since May 2021, the Reds have beaten United 4-2, 5-0, 4-0, 7-0 and 3-0. Mohamed Salah, in particular, has thrived against the M16 giants, with 12 goals and six assists — more than any other player in Premier League history.

Salah’s Influence in the Title Chase

Salah has already been involved in 30 Premier League goals this season, fuelling Liverpool’s title chase under Slot. His consistency has been the bedrock of Liverpool’s success, and any contributions from Chiesa would only enhance their attacking depth.

Liverpool’s dominance over United has been emphatic in recent years. If Chiesa can rediscover his form, he might just be the latest tormentor of the Red Devils.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

There’s no doubt that Liverpool fans have high expectations for Chiesa. The Italian arrived with a solid pedigree, and his initial price tag seemed a steal. But injuries and lack of minutes have dampened early enthusiasm.

The question is whether Chiesa can find his rhythm under Arne Slot’s guidance. Slot’s managerial style is known for getting the best out of his players, and Chiesa could be next in line for a resurgence.

United’s failure to secure Chiesa may sting further if the winger finds his feet and starts delivering at Anfield. Given the rivalry and the recent history between these two clubs, any success for Chiesa against United would be celebrated by the Kop.

That said, Liverpool fans remain patient. They’ve seen the likes of Fabinho and Andy Robertson take time to settle before becoming key players. The hope is that Chiesa follows a similar trajectory.

From a tactical perspective, Chiesa’s versatility is a huge asset. He can play across the front line, offering Slot flexibility in his attacking setups. His direct running style and eye for goal could be the missing piece in Liverpool’s attacking puzzle.

The upcoming clash with United might be the perfect stage for Chiesa to make his mark. The Anfield crowd will certainly back him, and a strong performance could be the spark he needs to reignite his career.
