First trophy of the season on the line in Wembley showdown

Liverpool and Newcastle meet in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

It will be fascinating to see how the Reds react to their first real setback under head coach Arne Slot. Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League by PSG on Tuesday night after losing a penalty shootout at Anfield following an arduous battle with the French champions. Responding by winning a first trophy under the Dutchman would quite the statement.

While the Premier League leaders remain favourites to lift the first major piece of domestic silverware this season, Slot’s side will need to prove themselves capable of quickly getting over such disappointment.

The Carabao Cup was of course the last trophy Jurgen Klopp won during his time with the club after an injury-stricken team of exciting younger players managed to overcome Chelsea last year, the Merseyside giants lifting it for a record-extending tenth time in the club’s history.

Standing in their way of an eleventh, however, are the Toon Army.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle beat Arsenal in both legs of the semi-final to get to their second final in two years and are desperate to avenge their defeat to Manchester United at this stage in 2023. For all the improvement Newcastle have made over the past few years, Howe’s side simply didn’t show up that day.

Things will surely be different here, albeit that may still not be enough to beat this Liverpool side. Newcastle are now much more used to the big occasion as they attempt to win a first domestic trophy since 1955.

Here’s everything you need to know about the game.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is a doubt ahead of the Carabao Cup final

Both teams have concerns heading into the game, particularly in defence.

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is a doubt for the Carabao Cup final after he was taken off following a knock during the defeat to PSG. Ibrahima Konate was also substituted during that game, although Slot was confident that was because of fatigue rather than due to injury.

Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are also expected to miss out, which should mean a start for Jarell Quansah at right-back. Tyler Morton is injured.

Anthony Gordon is suspended for Newcastle following the red card he was shown against Brighton in the FA Cup earlier this month. Lewis Hall’s ankle injury has ruled him out of the rest of the season, while Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles also won’t feature.

Klopp’s young side won this competition in perhaps more difficult circumstances last season given the sheer number of players missing through injury. Logic, as well as Liverpool’s form all season, would suggest that is likely to happen again.

Still, and while not to doubt Slot’s version of the team, Liverpool haven’t yet proven that under the Dutchman - purely because this is their first final together. Newcastle will take heart from that, even if injuries and suspension have robbed them the chance to deploy the system they enjoyed such success with against Arsenal in the semi-final.

Liverpool, however, would appear to have too much in the way of big-game quality and experience.

Liverpool to win, 2-1.
