When it comes to the Premier League, Liverpool and Everton are two of just six sides to have never been relegated, with both being ever present since the dawn of the new-top flight in 1992, as they were for the vast majority of previous decades.

So we’ve established they’re both big clubs but who has the better record in the fixture and how did this local rivalry begin? Find out all this and more below.

Why are Liverpool and Everton rivals?

The fact that they are so close together gives enough reason for the rivalry; however, it stems deeper than that. At first, there was only one club in the city of Liverpool, and that was Everton, who were founded in 1878. From 1884 until 1892, the Blues even played their home games at Anfield.

Following a dispute between board members and the club chairman John Houlding, who also owned Anfield, the club vacated the premises and purchased Goodison Park. In response, Houlding founded Liverpool Football Club and the rest is history.

Unlike other local rivalries, animosity between the fanbases has mostly been on a sporting level, with many families split evenly between red and blue. For reasons like this, the game became known as the “Friendly derby” as fans would often sit next to one another.

The bond between the clubs was strengthened by the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, which saw 97 Liverpool fans lose their lives as a result of negligence from the authority. The subsequent smear campaign against fans united the people of the city, which came during the Margaret Thatcher era when Liverpool was largely neglected.

On the pitch, the 1980s also saw the clubs both win league titles and compete for other domestic honours, with them being the two best sides in the country. Two all-Merseyside FA Cup finals in 1986 and 1989 were both won by Liverpool.

In more recent years, Liverpool have dominated the rivalry with Everton, only finishing below them three times in the Premier League era.

Take a look at the following stats, which tell you everything you need to know about the rivalry.

How many times have the two clubs played?

The clubs have played on a whopping 292 occasions, with games coming in the Division One/Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield as well as several wartime competitions. They have never met in Division Two, further crystallising their position as top-flight stalwarts.

What player has played in the most Liverpool vs Everton games?

Legendary Welsh goalkeeper Neville Southall holds the record for Merseyside derby appearances with 41 to his name. This and his Everton record of 751 appearances seem unlikely to be topped.

What player has scored the most goals in Liverpool vs Everton games?

Liverpool’s all-time top scorer Ian Rush also holds the record here, with 25 of a staggering 346 goals for the Reds coming against Everton. Four of these goals came in the two FA Cup finals between the sides, with two apiece in 1986 and 1989 at Wembley.

Which players have played for both clubs?

With the fixture being known as the “Friendly derby” and the stadiums just a twenty-minute walk apart, it is not overly surprising to know that 36 players have played for both the red and blue sides of Merseyside.

More than half of these players came before World War II and as the two sides began to compete against one another for honours, moves became less frequent.

The 1980s and 1990s did still see future Everton legend Kevin Sheedy move from Anfield to Goodison, followed by Peter Beardsley and Gary Ablett. Kop icon Steve McMahon went in the opposite direction.

Gerard Houllier’s Liverpool reign (1998-2004) saw him nab Nick Barmby and Abel Xavier, although neither replicated their Everton form.

There has not been a transfer between the clubs since but current Everton defender Conor Coady is a product of the Liverpool academy, making two appearances for the Anfield club in 2012/13.
