Liverpool have been relentless in the 2025 summer transfer market, investing heavily in a squad already strong enough to deliver last season’s Premier League title under Arne Slot. With more than £250 million already spent, the club shows no sign of slowing down as deadline day looms.
While Alexander Isak has been the name most strongly associated with Liverpool in recent weeks, negotiations with Newcastle remain uncertain. That has allowed other rumours to surface, with Real Madrid forward Rodrygo once again linked with a move to Anfield.
The Brazilian international has struggled for consistent minutes under Xabi Alonso and, with Manchester City also reportedly monitoring the situation, Liverpool appear to be in a straight contest for his signature. Rodrygo’s versatility across the front three and his age, just 24, make him a compelling option for the Reds.

As speculation around Rodrygo intensifies, former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman has given his view on the player, specifically in comparison to Cody Gakpo, who joined Liverpool in a £35m move in 2023. Asked by Metro to choose between the two, McManaman responded with refreshing honesty:
“That’s harder that one, if you ask me now, tomorrow, I’d say Cody Gakpo.”
His comments underline the faith many still hold in Gakpo, who continues to develop into a more rounded forward under Slot. The Dutchman’s ability to adapt tactically, combined with his work rate, has made him a valuable member of the squad.
McManaman also gave quick-fire answers on other comparisons, favouring Alexis Mac Allister over Eduardo Camavinga and backing Trent Alexander-Arnold against Jeremie Frimpong.
Despite McManaman’s preference for Gakpo, the potential addition of Rodrygo could add further depth and quality to Liverpool’s forward line. His ability to operate on either wing or as a central attacker offers Slot more flexibility in rotating his options, particularly across a long campaign that includes Champions League football.
Rodrygo has long been viewed as a technically sharp, intelligent attacker with the pace and skill to unsettle defences. His reduced role at Madrid, coupled with Liverpool’s proactive transfer stance, means a deal could be financially more viable than pursuing Isak. At a stage when Newcastle’s demands remain high, Rodrygo could represent both value and pedigree.
Even if Liverpool pursue Rodrygo, it does not necessarily come at the expense of Gakpo. Slot has already demonstrated his preference for squad depth and tactical fluidity. Having both players available would offer a blend of creativity, finishing and movement that strengthens Liverpool’s ability to compete across multiple competitions.
As the transfer window edges towards its close, much will depend on how Liverpool balance their priorities. Whether or not Rodrygo arrives, the debate around him and Gakpo highlights just how well-stocked the champions are in attacking areas.
