Liverpool could – and probably should – have been shown three red cards during their FA Cup match against Brighton.
The FA Cup holders crashed out of the competition after a 2-1 defeat to Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
Harvey Elliott had given the away side a lead but Brighton equalised nine minutes later when Tariq Lamptey’s shot was deflected in by Lewis Dunk.
And just when it looked as though we were heading for a replay, Kaoru Mitoma produced a moment of pure magic inside the penalty area to win the tie for Brighton.
It was a deserved victory for Roberto De Zerbi’s side, who have now beaten Liverpool twice in the space of a few weeks after a 3-0 win in the Premier League.
As for Liverpool, their season goes from bad to worse.
They should probably consider themselves fortunate, though, they finished the match with 11 men.
That’s because in the final five minutes of the match, they should have been shown three red cards for shocking challenges.
The first came in the 84th minute when Ibrahima Konate brought down Alexis Mac Allister when he was through on goal. The French defender caught the Argentine in the face with a stray arm, preventing a goalscoring opportunity.
Referee David Coote thought it was a coming together and VAR didn’t intervene.
Two minutes later, it was Fabinho’s turn – and had been on the pitch for 60 seconds. And this was the worst tackle of the lot.
The Brazilian caught Shane Ferguson with a nasty tackle and caught him on the back of the ankle. It left the striker in agony. From Fabinho’s reaction alone, Coote should have sent him off with the midfielder acknowledging his shocking challenge.
But, again, VAR didn’t get involved after Coote only showed Fabinho a yellow card.
But Liverpool weren’t done there.
In the 91st minute, before Mitoma’s winner, Robertson left Mac Allister on the floor with a high-studded challenge that caught him above the ankle.
Robertson was booked and, guess what, VAR did nothing.
A video has now emerged showing the three shocking tackles.
After the match, Jurgen Klopp insisted ‘a couple’ of his players have to improve – although there were signs of improvements from the 3-0 defeat against the same opposition.
“We have to improve, body language, a couple of boys have to do much better,” he said.
“But last game here we couldn’t have won. I think today nobody would have been surprised if we had won the game.”
