Although the transfer window is now closed, Liverpool have reportedly already identified one target for the future.

Arne Slot has enjoyed a good start to life at Liverpool, impressing in the Premier League, being nominated for the August Manager of the Month and becoming the only Reds boss to win their first game away at Old Trafford in almost 100 years.

Despite the good start on the pitch, Liverpool received some criticism for their business in the transfer market this summer. The Reds only signed one player, Federico Chiesa, and agreed a deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili for next summer but a number of promising prospects from the academy were moved on.

Now, it looks like Liverpool are already thinking ahead to January or maybe even next summer and they have reportedly already identified one transfer target.

Liverpool’s scouting mission

According to Football Insider, Liverpool scouted Angel Gomes as he started his first England game as the Three Lions beat Finland 2-0.

The report states that Liverpool have joined Tottenham and Newcastle in the race to sign the 24-year-old, who came through Manchester United’s academy.

Gomes joined Lille on a free transfer in 2020 and has since made 119 appearances for the French side, also spending a season on loan at Boavista.

Capable of playing as a no.10 or as a central midfielder Gomes would be a useful asset for Slot’s side.

Could Gomes end up at Liverpool?

It is very early days in this transfer saga, but Gomes could definitely end up at Liverpool.

Gomes is out of contract at the end of this season and currently has an estimated market value of €15.6 million, making him a very affordable option for the Reds.

At only 24, Gomes is young enough that Slot could develop him into a key player, and he is highly thought of by Lee Carsley, who constantly selected him for England’s U21s before giving him his full England debut in the recent international break.

Liverpool may have only made one signing this summer but they are sure to back Slot as time goes on and a move for Angel Gomes could be on the cards.
