Liverpool defender Calvin Ramsay is set to join Scottish club Kilmarnock on loan in January, according to a report from the Daily Record.
The 21-year-old right-back joined League One club Wigan Athletic on loan in 2024-25, but he was recalled after the club felt that Ramsay hadn’t been getting enough game time.
Kilmarnock have struck a deal with Liverpool over signing on loan for the rest of the season, and he is expected to complete his move later this week.
The Reds defender had interest from League One and Two in England, while St Johnstone had expressed an interest in taking him. But the defender had no interest in joining a relegation battle.
According to The Scottish Sun, Ramsay will accept the offer of moving to Rugby Park for the second half of the season.
Killie boss Derek McInnes knows Ramsay very well. He was one of the brightest young talents coming through the academy when McInnes was the manager at the Dons.
He has been at Anfield since 2022 after the Reds paid a fee of more than £6 million to land him from Aberdeen.
In theory, this could be the perfect loan move for his development.
He has had spells at Preston and Bolton and at Wigan, but it didn’t work as Liverpool had expected. His spell at Wigan was most frustrating. He managed only 302 minutes in the third tier of English football, and the club have made the right decision to terminate the deal.
Conor Bradley has emerged as a reliable back-up option for Trent Alexander-Arnold, and it has pushed Ramsay further down the pecking order.
The loan move to Rugby Park is a win-win situation for Liverpool and the player. Liverpool are hopeful that the loan spell will be beneficial for his development, and from the player’s perspective, he simply hopes to get regular game time.
