Paris Saint-Germain initially opted for a short-term solution by loaning Xavi Simons to RB Leipzig for another season. However, his future is now somewhat settled, as the German club has secured him on a permanent transfer.

Last September, journalist Christian Falk reported that Manchester City and Liverpool were closely following Simons’ situation. Early last summer, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Manchester United had also shown interest, reflecting the Dutch midfielder’s growing status among Europe’s top clubs.

More recently, CaughtOffside suggested that Manchester United could have the edge over Manchester City in the race to sign Simons next summer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Simons has officially joined RB Leipzig on a permanent deal from PSG. The transfer is valued at €80 million, including add-ons, with an initial fee of €55 million and a sell-on clause.

Romano also noted that Simons’ contract runs until June 2027, though he could move again as soon as this summer, with several clubs already keeping an eye on him.

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reported on Saturday that Leipzig “will be willing to let the player move on” if the price is right. Moreover, the report reveals that Liverpool are “long-term admirers” of the 21-year-old but that it would take a “big fee” to prise him away.

“Obviously, he made his move to Leipzig permanent in the January window from PSG, but he only signed the deal until 2027, which suggests that RB Leipzig could be open to selling him and flipping him for a big profit come this summer.

“Again, as I said, PSG sold him on in January to go to RB Leipzig, but we’ve already seen in the past RB Leipzig are not afraid to sell their players if they can make a huge profit, which I’m sure they would do on Xavi Simons. They bought him for around £41 million.”

O’Rourke also mentions how much RB Leipzig could want for Simons as they look to recoup their investment and a profit they’d need to share with PSG, considering their sell-on clause.

“They could probably sell him for £60 million plus in the summer if they decided to. And yeah, if Man City are looking to replace Kevin De Bruyne, Simons would be a good fit. I think there’ll be a number of clubs looking at Xavi Simons in this summer transfer window. Liverpool are long-term admirers of him.

“Manchester United have also been linked with him as well, and I’m sure there’ll be a lot of other top European clubs looking at Xavi Simons. It would take a big fee to get him out of Leipzig, who obviously were quite smart in getting that loan deal made permanent.

“But I think, like we’ve seen in the past, if a big offer does come in, Leipzig will be willing to let the player move on. I’m sure the player himself would be interested in a chance to move to a major European club.”
