“Carlisle United are considering making a shock approach to Steven Gerrard.” That’s the stunning revelation from the Daily Mail as the League Two strugglers attempt to avoid dropping out of the EFL. The club’s American owners have floated the audacious idea of bringing the former Liverpool captain and England international to Brunton Park, just days after he left Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq.
Given Carlisle’s dire position at the bottom of League Two, this move would be nothing short of extraordinary. Gerrard, a manager with experience at Rangers, Aston Villa, and in the Saudi Pro League, may seem an improbable candidate for a relegation scrap. As Mail Sport rightly points out, “A scenario which sees the former England captain agreeing to oversee a League Two relegation scrap, albeit to a club with a loyal and large support, would be viewed by most as a long-shot.”
The Cumbrians are in desperate need of stability. Just months after American investors took over, Carlisle have already sacked two managers. Paul Simpson was dismissed in August after signing 12 new players, and Mike Williamson followed in January after making another dozen signings.
Currently five points adrift of safety, Carlisle’s survival hopes are fading fast. The ownership’s willingness to explore high-profile names speaks volumes about their ambition—or, some might argue, their desperation.
Bookmakers have former Bolton boss Ian Evatt as the frontrunner, but reports suggest Carlisle’s owners have at least discussed Gerrard as an option. Whether those discussions lead to an approach, let alone an agreement, remains to be seen.
Gerrard’s managerial career has been a mixed bag. His time at Rangers was a roaring success—he ended Celtic’s dominance by winning the Scottish Premiership in 2021. But his spell at Aston Villa was underwhelming, lasting just 11 months with a return of 13 wins from 40 games.
His move to Al-Ettifaq raised eyebrows, and despite early promise, he left with the team 12th out of 16, having won 23 of 59 matches. Given that exit, his next job is crucial. A move to Carlisle would be unexpected, to say the least.

If this move happens, it would be one of the most shocking managerial appointments in recent history. From managing Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson at Villa and Al-Ettifaq to fighting for survival in League Two—it’s hard to imagine Gerrard taking the plunge.
Liverpool fans will be scratching their heads at the idea of their legendary captain managing in the fourth tier. While it’s clear Gerrard needs a fresh start after his Saudi stint, this would be an extreme reset. Some might argue he needs to rebuild his reputation, but would a relegation battle at Carlisle enhance his managerial CV?
Gerrard has always been ambitious. His move to Rangers proved he wanted to win trophies, not just take jobs for the sake of it. Would he really risk his managerial credibility in a scenario where failure could see a club drop out of the EFL altogether?
Carlisle fans will be hopeful, but for now, this seems more like an ownership group making headlines rather than a realistic managerial appointment.
