Liverpool’s Full-Back Future and the Andrea Cambiaso Conundrum

As Liverpool head into a transformative summer, one name unexpectedly surfaced in the gossip columns: Andrea Cambiaso. The Juventus full-back, who was a strong target for Manchester City in January, is now being linked to Liverpool as speculation mounts about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential departure to Real Madrid.

Tutto Mercato first reported the story, indicating that Juventus are open to selling Cambiaso due to financial pressure and internal restructuring following the dismissal of manager Thiago Motta. With FFP compliance a clear concern, Juventus are looking to cash in on their valuable assets—and Cambiaso is right at the top of that list.

“The sale of Cambiaso isn’t just desirable—it’s financially imperative,” a Turin-based analyst told Gazzetta dello Sport. “Liverpool’s involvement could inflate his price beyond €70 million, providing Juventus crucial liquidity.”

However, Cambiaso’s agent, Giovanni Bia, wasted no time in cooling the flames of speculation. Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, Bia made it clear that his client is not currently seeking a move away from Turin:

“He is absolutely focused on Juventus… It is normal that there are these sirens being one of the strongest full backs in Europe… At the moment he is not interested in anything, his goal is Juventus and to do very well there.”

Liverpool’s Left-Back Landscape in Flux

The talk around Cambiaso emerges at a time of uncertainty in Liverpool’s defensive setup. With Alexander-Arnold’s future reportedly set for the Bernabéu, and Andy Robertson reaching the latter stages of his peak years, Liverpool’s hierarchy—led by new sporting director Richard Hughes—must make smart, forward-thinking decisions.

Cambiaso’s profile fits modern Liverpool requirements: a two-footed full-back with excellent positional awareness, progressive passing, and high tactical discipline. Those are attributes Arne Slot could certainly utilise, especially given his penchant for intelligent wide defenders.

Despite Manchester City already agreeing a €60 million fee for Cambiaso in January, FFP concerns stalled the move, making him potentially available again this summer. Pep Guardiola still admires the player’s flexibility, and City are reportedly ready to revisit talks.

Juventus’ Need May Shape Market Movements

With Juventus facing budget shortfalls and lacking Champions League guarantees, Cambiaso’s sale is seen as a vital financial manoeuvre. But while the club may be eager, player commitment is another story.

“His dream is to bring Juventus back to great levels,” Bia added. “But I have no doubt that within one or two years he will do it.”

That type of rhetoric often precedes long-term contract renewals or delayed exits—especially when clubs want to hold firm on valuation. If Cambiaso’s head has been turned, it doesn’t show publicly. But agents are rarely this vocal without an ulterior motive, and this could be a well-orchestrated attempt to retain leverage in future negotiations.

City or Liverpool? Tug-of-War Seems Premature

For now, any Liverpool-Cambiaso link remains theoretical rather than actionable. Bia’s quotes suggest there’s been no direct contact with the player, although that doesn’t exclude informal interest.

Liverpool are well aware of the need to plan for life beyond Alexander-Arnold, and even if Conor Bradley is being groomed as a successor, another top-tier full-back would be necessary.

Manchester City remain better placed logistically and financially, though Liverpool’s transfer strategy has often been built on patience and precision—waiting for the right moment rather than chasing shadows.

If Cambiaso is to become available, Liverpool could still enter the frame. But for now, the message is simple: “He is not interested.”

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, Cambiaso’s link is both exciting and frustrating. On the one hand, his profile fits what Arne Slot could use—mobile, technically sharp, and with European pedigree. He’s more complete than a stop-gap and has age on his side at just 25.

But on the other hand, the quotes from Giovanni Bia seem like a hard stop. If the player is genuinely “absolutely happy at Juventus” and dreaming of bringing them “back to great levels,” then this is probably a smokescreen from the club to retain control over the narrative—and potentially drive the price up for interested clubs like Manchester City.

Let’s not forget, Liverpool rarely enter public bidding wars, and the idea of paying €70 million-plus for a player not actively pushing for a move feels unlikely.

Still, the Trent situation looms large. If he does depart, then Hughes and Slot must respond aggressively in the market. Whether that means turning to Cambiaso or someone else—say Jeremie Frimpong or even João Cancelo on a short-term deal—remains to be seen.

But make no mistake: this summer isn’t just about rebuilding the midfield or finding a new forward. Full-back succession planning could define the Slot era before it even properly begins.
