Liverpool are seriously interested in signing Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt as the Reds plot a third raid on the Bundesliga.
Arne Slot’s side have agreed a deal to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and are in advanced negotiations to sign the defender’s Leverkusen teammate, Florian Wirtz. The latter deal could represent a British record transfer deal.
The Premier League champions are continuing an active start to the summer with the pursuit of a centre-forward.
Hugo Ekitike is a player that Slot and chief executive Michael Edwards are keen on and initial negotiations over a deal have taken place. Liverpool are keen to bring in a number nine, amid transfer interest in Darwin Nunez. Sides in Spain and Saudi Arabia are interested in the out-of-favour Uruguay international.
Chelsea are also pushing to sign the 22-year-old Ekitike, who Frankfurt value at €100m (£83.8m). The Bundesliga side are yet to receive an offer from either Premier League side but both are interested in reaching an agreement.
Ekitike is in demand after a standout season in Germany. The forward scored 22 goals in all competitions for Frankfurt and added 12 assists across all competitions.
He led the Bundesliga for shots and ranked second for xG, while also sitting among the league leaders for successful take-ons (6th) and carries into the penalty area (4th).
Frankfurt are under no pressure to sell, after securing qualification to next season’s Champions League. Ekitike is open to an exit, though discussions could be complicated by his involvement in this summer’s u-21 European Championship.
He is contracted until 2029 at Frankfurt, having signed a five-year deal when turning his loan from Paris Saint-Germain into a permanent move last summer.
