Liverpool have beaten Southampton 3–1 at Anfield, moving 16 points clear of Arsenal, though Arsenal have two games in hand. A well-taken Darwin Núñez equalizer in the second half, combined with a Mohamed Salah penalty brace, paved the way for Liverpool’s victory. However, what did we really learn from this game? How convincing were Liverpool today in their performance?

The truth is, Liverpool played a game of two halves. The Reds were trailing at halftime due to a stoppage-time opener by Will Smallbone, aided by a moment of miscommunication by Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker. It’s safe to say Liverpool were nowhere near the level required in the first half, with fatigued bodies such as Dominik Szoboszlai, who showed nowhere near the energy levels he usually does. He wasn’t the only one, though. Arne Slot made three halftime substitutions, taking off the Hungarian along with Kostas Tsimikas and Curtis Jones. Liverpool’s second-half display was much more convincing; however, it remains evident that fatigue is setting in for some key players. What could this realistically mean for Liverpool in the long run?
Will Liverpool be in the market for a new left-back?
While Liverpool’s league position is unlikely to be threatened at this point, there are concerns about the potential long-term effects of fatigue, especially when it comes to their Champions League form. The Reds have already been fortunate to escape with a subpar performance against Paris Saint-Germain, and as the competition intensifies, relying on moments of brilliance or resilience may not be enough. Fans will hope that the fatigue doesn’t carry over into their European campaign, where even small lapses in form could prove costly. Arne Slot faces the challenge of managing player energy, ensuring they maintain the necessary sharpness for the Champions League while remaining dominant domestically.
On the other hand, Liverpool remain strong favourites to progress to the next round of the Champions League, holding a 1–0 advantage as they return to Anfield. With the quality they possess, the Reds are among the top contenders in the competition, capable of matching any European side on their day. Confident in their abilities, Liverpool will approach this challenge with optimism, knowing they have what it takes to secure their place in the next stage.
