Liverpool’s interest in Nahuel Molina this summer, as reported by Marca, was always rooted in contingency planning rather than commitment. With Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future role expected to evolve and Conor Bradley continuing his upward trajectory, the Reds explored the idea of adding experienced depth at right-back, and Molina, a key figure in Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid side, was among those considered.

At 27, Molina brings a wealth of top-level experience, including a World Cup winners’ medal with Argentina and regular appearances in La Liga and European competition. His attacking instincts from full-back and defensive aggression made him a short-term option should other targets prove unattainable.
“He would’ve offered Liverpool an experienced pair of hands at the back to cover Trent in the short-term,” Marca explained.
That scenario, however, has now been overtaken by developments elsewhere. Jeremie Frimpong — younger, more dynamic and more productive in the final third — has become the primary target for Liverpool. The Dutchman’s arrival is believed to be imminent, with reports confirming the club have secured an agreement in principle.
Frimpong’s offensive output significantly outweighs Molina’s, while also aligning better with the club’s new style under Arne Slot, who values full-backs capable of stretching opposition lines and committing numbers forward.

While a move for Molina no longer appears on the cards, his link underlines the diligence involved in Liverpool’s recruitment model. Every position, even those considered well-stocked, is thoroughly scouted in case the unexpected occurs.
Another factor in Molina’s non-pursuit is the continued development of Conor Bradley. The Northern Ireland international has proven himself as a capable understudy to Alexander-Arnold and is expected to feature heavily in the upcoming campaign.
Liverpool’s strategy now appears to rest on a two-man rotation at right-back, with Frimpong challenging for regular minutes and Bradley continuing his progression. Slot’s arrival marks a shift in tone — attacking variety from full-back areas is central, and the choice of Frimpong reflects that intent.

Despite Liverpool’s decision not to advance talks, Molina’s future is likely to be away from Madrid. Reports suggest interest from Juventus, Napoli, Roma and Newcastle United remains strong, and a transfer this summer appears likely.
His versatility — able to play both as a full-back and a wide midfielder — ensures he remains an attractive option for clubs seeking a reliable, hard-working outlet on the right.
In this case, Liverpool’s interest was less about commitment and more about comprehensive planning — ensuring that no avenue is left unexplored before committing resources. It is a hallmark of a club operating with intent, especially in a summer where change is expected across multiple positions.
There’s always a sense of relief when you see the club avoid a signing that might have been more reactive than progressive. Molina is a solid player, and yes, a World Cup winner, but it’s hard to see how he would have truly fitted into the long-term vision at Anfield — especially under a new manager like Arne Slot who’s expected to modernise the team’s tactical identity.
Bradley’s development has been one of the brightest points in the past 12 months. He’s shown he belongs at the top level and, importantly, looks ready to compete. Slot clearly values youth and high ceilings, which is why Frimpong feels like the right move. He’s quick, sharp in the final third, and has the energy to suit a pressing system. He also brings real end product — something we’ve needed from our full-backs when Trent steps into midfield.
Molina might still have a good move ahead of him, but if Liverpool had signed him, it would’ve felt like short-term cover rather than a long-term solution. This summer is about building something fresh, and signing the right type of player matters more than ever.
