Liverpool have announced the creation of a new Heysel memorial at Anfield Road marking the 40th anniversary of the disaster, noting that they will be ‘forever bound’ with Juventus by the tragedy.
There is already a plaque on the wall of the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand, but this will be moved to a new location to act as a place for ‘reflection and remembrance.’
It will include the names of all the 39 supporters who were killed at the Heysel Stadium on May 29, 1985.
Liverpool fans sparked a fight in the stands before the European Cup Final in Brussels, leading to fans fleeing and the collapse of a wall, prompting the death of 39 people, most of them Juventus supporters.

This new Liverpool memorial will have images of the two club scarves knotted together, with the inscription: “Forever Bound, in memory and friendship.”
Juventus will also unveil a new plaque in Turin, titled ‘Verso Altrove’ – Towards Beyond – which will be attended by Liverpool CEO Billy Horgan and former player Ian Rush.
“To see a new memorial created with such care means a lot and it’s incredibly important to have a fitting tribute to remember the 39 fans who lost their lives,” said Rush, who was in the stadium on that tragic day.
“We must never forget why this matters, and why we continue to stand together in solidarity, all these years later.”
